QR Codes Arrives On RedLaser App

October 14, 2010
QR Codes continue to amaze those of us that like new technology. Unfortunately, they haven’t caught on with the masses. At least not yet. eBay hopes to change that by introducing the technology into its RedLaser app. As a concept, QR Codes (short for Quick Response), allow a user to scan a barcode which then sends information to your smartphone. This can include links, videos, text, or photos. These codes are slowly showing up in magazine advertising and on in-store ads at places like Best Buy. RedLaser, which was just purchased by eBay in June, is a popular scanning app that has been in the App Store for some time. It allows you to scan an item’s barcode to see where you can purchase it and at what price.

By adding QR Codes to RedLaser, eBay is putting the technology into one of the iPhone’s most popular scanning apps. This could be just enough to convince marketers to add the technology to more of their advertising. The free RedLaser app is available in the App Store today.
