Review: Look-Up - The Truth Is Up There - Plus Win A Promo Code

October 14, 2010

Overview

Look up to the skies above you to see incoming UFOs, and you need to blast them away. Look-Up is a new augmented reality game where you move your iPhone, and the camera captures your actual surroundings, and the game overlays UFO, and a shooting HUD over the view. You point your iPhone in all directions to spot the UFO, and then tap to fire.

Features

There are nine levels of increasing alien invasions, or you can play an endless invasion mode in Hold m' up. There is also multiplayer over BlueTooth to defend the skies with a friend. There are a few heavy duty weapons to collect, and you can play in 180 or 360 degree mode. *Note this app only works on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

The Good

It's neat seeing UFOs flying around the actual physical location you're at. You blast away UFOs in your house, out in your yard, at a local park or anywhere you want. The game is definitely challenging as the ships avoid you so well. You never know where the ships are located with a 360 degree scope to defend. The ships can be at eye level or directly above you, and you need to pan quickly before you’re killed.

The Bad

When you're playing outside in the sun you'll have to squint to try to see, and even then the screen is washed out. You just hope the UFOs aren't on the sun side. The UFOs move around erratically so they're very tough to shoot down, but all their shots hit you. The game is neat on first launch, but that wears off quickly without much variability. All the levels play pretty much the same just with some tougher enemies and more of them as you progress. The game is really lacking in the fun department with boring gameplay, and the only innovation is the augmented reality part. The ships, explosions, and firing animations are very archaic, and way behind the graphical standard of today. The game focuses too much on just letting you play in your actual surroundings, and every other aspect is lacking.

The Verdict

Look-Up is something different that is a nice change of pace as you overlay a shooter on your actual surroundings. The neat factor wears off quickly as every aspect of the game is as simple as can be. The gameplay is lackluster, there is practically no variability, and the graphics aren't very good. Look-Up focuses too much on the augmented reality, and not nearly enough on any other aspect making it not worth picking up. ***To win a copy of Look-Up just leave a comment below or retweet this post.
