Rumor: Apple Discussing CDMA iPhone In India
October 12, 2010
Adding to the rumors that Apple really is about to unveil a Verizon iPhone in the United States, comes this story. According to Cult Of Mac, Apple is in talks with two Indian mobile phone carriers to bring a CDMA iPhone to the world’s second most populous nation.
Verizon mobile phones run on a CDMA network.
Both India-based Reliance Communications Ltd. and Tata Teleservices Ltd. are rumored to have talked to the Cupertino, California-based company about offering the iPhone. Between the two companies, they offer exclusive CDMA mobile coverage across India.
According to the report:
Although India has 670 million wireless customers, 20 percent — or 134 million — use CDMA-based handsets. Increased competition could also lower the iPhone’s current $670 pricetag, a figure out of reach for almost half of the country’s population earning less than $1.25 per day.ModMyi concludes that "though CDMA phones account for only one in five in India, the country is the fastest-growing mobile phone market, with 18 million new users coming online every month." Of course, this story could be completely accurate or just another rumor. Until Apple announces something to the contrary, file this one under "CDMA iPhone rumors."
