This Will Be Huge: First Third-Party Video AirPlay Implementation Gets Demoed

November 24, 2010
The big question surrounding the arrival of AirPlay is without a doubt: What will developers be able to do with it? So far, only Apple's native apps allow you to stream video from your device to an Apple TV. Apple has, however, been pretty clear that they'll be opening the feature to third-party developers, and hopefully let them go wild with it. It will certainly take some time before you'll be able to see the first apps that implement this new feature in the App store. In the meantime, celebrity iPhone developer Erica Sadun from Tuaw.com has already managed to put together the first AirPlay proof of concept. In a video (embedded below), she demonstrates the first app she put together. It allows her to stream a video found on an online archive onto her Apple TV and we believe this could be used with both local or online stored files. It doesn't answer our big question about whether AirPlay can actually support streaming content beyond video, like a game, for example. Also, it looks like making this work is still extremely complicated, and doesn't seem to be App Store-safe. That is, we don't believe developers can already take advantage of the feature and submit apps to the App Store with AirPlay enabled. Regardless, this is the first proof that third-party video on AirPlay is alive and working. Without a doubt, many more exciting implementations will follow (probably on the jailbreak first), and we can't wait to check them out. Also, we're hoping Apple will allow third-party developers to implement AirPlay simply and officially very soon. Now, see for yourself in her video:

So. now you tell me, what's next?
