Report: iPhone Best Selling Smartphone, But Android Is Most Popular OS
November 1, 2010
The iPhone is now the best selling smartphone in the U.S. According to a Canalys survey, Apple’s device took 26.2 percent of the smartphone market during the last quarter. However, this isn’t the whole story.
When consumers purchase a new smartphone, they are making a choice of both hardware and software. If they want a phone with iOS installed, their choices are small. They can purchase the iPhone 4 or 3GS.
However, if they want a smartphone with Google’s Android OS, their choices are much wider. Today, smartphones from Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Sony Ericsson as well as others include the Android OS.
Because of this, Google’s OS is thriving with sales up 1,309 percent worldwide from this time last year. Today, Android OS is installed on 43.6 percent of all the smartphones purchased in the United States. But no one phone beats the iPhone in terms of hardware.
Therefore, while Apple’s iPhone is the best selling smartphone, it’s operating system is not. That crown belongs to Android.
