New App Helps Citizens Save Lives

New App Helps Citizens Save Lives

January 28, 2011
Heart attacks happen every day. What occurs in the few minutes following the event often determines whether the person lives or dies. Unfortunately, even a call to 911 could take too long. Now, a California fire department has released an iPhone/iPod touch app. It alerts the public when someone close is in immediate need. The FireDepartment.org iPhone app provides a virtual window into the San Ramon Valley, California’s 9-1-1 dispatch center.  It alerts regular citizens when someone nearby needs assistance. This information can enable someone to help someone before the professionals arrive. Check out this video:

The app, which only supports residents of the San Ramon Valley, is easy to customize. Alerts on current Structure Fires (SF), CPR/AED, or Vehicle Accidents (VA) are just three of the alerts which are available. It also includes the ability to listen to current radio emergency dispatches, and view photos from scenes. This is an incredible tool. Hopefully apps like this will become available in other areas in the near future. The free FireDepartment.org iPhone app is available in the App Store.
