Google Launches iPhone Translating App
February 8, 2011
The App Store is filled with apps that allow you to you translate text from one language to another. They have various levels of complexity and sophistication, some are very basic text-only translators, some are more advanced like the incredible Word Lense. Nevertheless, despite powering most of these apps, Google didn't have one of it own.
Well, Google remedied to that today with a new, free iPhone app called Google translate. It supports 57 languages, and while it will require an internet connection to work, it also supports speech recognition for over 15 languages. Not to mention that it can display your translation in full screen or read it out loud in a not-too-shabby synthesized voice in over 23 languages.
All in all, it's nothing groundbreaking. The app looks very much the same as the rest of Google's apps and doesn't bring any interesting new features . If you consider that it requires an internet connection to work, its usage is clearly very limited. On the bright side it's free, so I guess you could give it a try.
Google Translate for iPhone is available on the Apple App Store now, free of charge.
