Review: Candy Rush - A Game Is Like A Box of Chocolates

February 10, 2011
Appy is back at it again with their spin on the time management game with the brand new Candy Rush (Universal, $0.99) which is similar to Zombie Pizza. One amusing thing is that Appy made Trucks and Skulls as a more manly version of Angry Birds, and now have made Candy Rush as a more girly version of Zombie Pizza. If you were turned off by the grotesque nature of making pizza with human organs, you may be intrigued by making candy boxes with truffles, candy canes, and chocolate strawberries. Candy Rush seems to fit the spirit of Valentine’s Day perfectly as you’re arranging boxes of candy under the time constraints of the big day coming soon. The candy is pumped out, and travel around the conveyor belt, and you simply drag the pieces you want into the box in the middle. Your goal is to make different arrangements of candy filling a box for four with four of the same pieces, two and two, four different pieces, or a special order. The story mode introduces new elements across the 63 levels as you try to make as much money as possible in the given time limit of each level. Rush mode is an endless style where each box you deliver bumps up the time a little, and you go until time runs out. Not only do you use candies, but you try to avoid spinach and eggs, while making multiple boxes at once. The game is practically the same as Zombie Pizza with the style being the only real difference. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing as Zombie Pizza has a great game mechanic where you have to decide to try to make more valuable boxes, or just try to make more boxes. You can wait for the one last item to make a match of four or instead send out two boxes of mix and match in that time. The style itself is in a word, bubbly, with all the cuteness you would expect from a candy shop run by a little girl, and her cat. It’s all extremely bright and colorful, and there is a nice polish and detail to the game play area. A pop soundtrack is included, and as you go on you earn awards that are only on the device with no online social connectivity. Candy Rush is perfect for Valentine’s Day and time management game fans that is well made and has plenty of fun. Candy Rush is worth picking up and will give you a sugar rush for only $0.99.
