First Look At Home-Sharing In iOS 4.3
March 4, 2011
We already knew what Apple had planned to add to iOS 4.3, thanks to the many developer previews they released. One feature we didn't know about, that was unveiled on Wednesday, was Home Sharing. It's a feature that allows users to access their iTunes library from their iDevices over Wi-Fi.
While iOS 4.3 hasn't gone public yet, Cult of Mac was nice enough to break the NDA, and post some pictures as well as details on how the feature works.
To take advantage of Home Sharing, iOS 4.3 will allow you to enter your iTunes credentials in the iPod tab of the Settings app. Given that you have activated Home Sharing in iTunes, are using the same credentials (in the preferences), and you're on the same Wi-Fi network, your iTunes library will pop up in your iDevice iPod app. You're then free to stream movies, music, and anything you want over Wi-Fi to all your iPhones, iPads and iPod touches.
Reportedly, the whole process is seamless, and takes under 30 seconds to setup, so we're looking forward to it.
You can see the preferences setting below, and the shared library view at the top of this post.
