Netflix's Original Programming Plan Could Bring More Users To iOS Devices

March 18, 2011
In a move that could change how we watch TV shows and movies, Netflix has announced it will begin offering original programming to its customers. The announcement, which was made on the Netflix Blog, could also make iOS devices even more popular. The hour-long drama, “House of Cards,” starring Oscar Winner Kevin Spacey will be Netflix’s first foray into original programming. David Fincher ("The Social Network," "Se7en") will serve as its Executive Producer. The show is expected sometime in 2012. Netflix isn’t actually producing the series. Rather, they have agreed to license it before it is successfully produced. With Netflix’s streaming package already a popular choice of iOS device owners, this news could prove interesting. It could result in more viewers canceling their cable or satellite TV service, and watching more programming using the Netflix app. It could also result in the buying of more iPhones or iPads. Netflix has committed to at least 26 episodes of the serialized drama, which is based on a BBC mini-series from the 1990s. Spacey will star as a ruthless politician who wants to be President of the United States. Fincher, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Social Network” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” will direct the pilot written by Beau Willimon (“Farragut North” and the upcoming George Clooney-directed “The Ides of March.” ) The universal Netflix app is free, with unlimited streaming available starting at $7.99 per month.
