That Was Quick: Verizon Nears 12 Percent Of U.S. iPhone Market

March 15, 2011
Lineup eight iPhone owners, and one of those probably purchased their handset at Verizon. This translates into Verizon now taking around 12 percent of the overall U.S. iPhone market, as reported by mobile ad firm Chitika Insights. Assuming the 12 percent number is correct, it is a remarkable accomplishment for Verizon. After all, the Verizon iPhone debuted less than two months ago. Before then, AT&T was the sole U.S. carrier for the handset going back to 2007 with the release of the first iPhone. Since the Verizon iPhone debuted, Chitika has maintained a live tracker to determine the breakdown of iPhone users between Verizon and AT&T. This information is based on web usage data collected from the Chitika Ad Network, and is updated hourly. Verizon’s share of the market hit a high of 12.7 percent earlier in the day. Since then, the number has fallen slightly to around 11 percent.
