Crackle (Free) by Crackle, Inc. is an entertainment app that allows you to stream HD full-length movies, TV shows, trailers and minisodes on your iPhone or iPad. There are many genres to choose from such as: comedy, action, drama, horror and some old classics. There is a fairly large collection, so you are almost guaranteed to find something you will enjoy.

Crackle just released this app for iPhone and iPad, but it has previously been available on Sony TV, Blu-ray players, Playstation, and Roku Devices. If you set up an account at www.Crackle.com, you can manage your playlist and even watch your favorites right on your computer.

One warning for parents is that "R" rated movies are easily accessible. You do have to agree that you are older than 17 when you download the app, but that is not a very secure process. Currently, there do not appear to be any parental controls to manage what can and cannot be watched.

This app will work on either Wi-Fi or 3G networks. I tested the streaming using Verizon, which I have on my iPhone, and AT&T, which is on my iPad. I had the same signal strength on both carriers, four out of five bars. They both performed equally well and the streaming quality was good. The only word of caution is you use a lot of data when streaming any kind of video. Your free movie might just cost you $10 because of the overage charges if you are not careful. Streaming video also consumes a large amount of battery life.

There is a catch for all these movies streaming to your device for free. As you can probably guess, there are commercials. They last only 30 seconds or less. In the videos I watched, they appeared every 10 to 20 minutes. The app froze up and crashed a couple of times, but I imagine this will be fixed in a future update.

It is nice to have another option for streaming videos. I often use TV.com, but there are no movies available using that app. Since Crackle is free, you have nothing to lose, so give it a try!
