WindowSeat Eliminates Need For GPS In Tracking Flights, Free Version Now Available

April 4, 2011
One of the better flight tracking apps is now available as a free version. WindowsSeat Lite lets travelers track flights departing from Atlanta, Austin, New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. For all commercial airports in the lower 48, you will need to upgrade to the full version of WindowSeat, which we discussed in January when it debuted. Either app helps track flights without a GPS connection by predicting realtime flight information based on historical data between cities. WindowsSeat’s strength is its ability to help current travelers track their flight’s path as they are sitting on the plane. During the flight, users can adjust the flight time, and the app will recalibrate the plane icon’s location on the map. Users can also adjust the plane location, and WindowSeat will recalculate the remaining flight time. Once an adjustment is made, WindowSeat automatically calibrates the flight’s speed. As flights are tracked, points of interest are shown. This includes landmarks and geographical areas that users can learn about when they fly over. Version 1.2 includes:
  • Better modeling of position and speed
  • Ability to fetch the assigned route and airtime of your flight
  • Visual enhancements and bug fixes
Simply put, this is a great app and it's nice to see the company behind it, AppOven, offering a Lite version for users to test it out. WindowSeat is available for a limited time for $2.99 in the App Store, which is a $4 savings off its original price. WindowsSeat Lite is also available.
