Classic Atari 2600 Game Enduro Gets An iPhone Port

May 5, 2011
Want to experience what gaming on the Atari 2600 felt like in the 80s? Activision's retro racing title, Enduro, has just hit the App Store. The game has very simple, but addictive gameplay that should please fans of the original. You control a vehicle that follows a path on-rails while you dodge various obstacles and other vehicles popping up on the road. There are various environments to race through, from lush green valleys to snow-filled mountains. All the game's original graphics have been preserved without any changes. The simple sound effects are also unchanged. Purists should definitely be happy with the transition to the iPhone as the game is really meant for retro gamers and arcade fans. The gameplay looks quite enjoyable, and it's a perfect fit for the iPhone. One very nice thing: there aren't many virtual buttons cluttering the screen. Game control is accomplished via tilt using the iPhone accelerometer and gyroscope. There are only two commands, accelerate and brake, and they are controlled by touching below the gameplay area on the sides of the screen. This is the type of game where only small and precise turns are needed; you won't have to constantly tilt the device a lot, as is required in many other games. The object is to pass a specific number of cars in a game "day," this will allow you to advance in the game. In the succeeding days the number of cars you must pass will increase, thus the game will keep challenging you. Each day is a long distance endurance race. Here is a gameplay video: Enduro is currently available on the App Store for $0.99.
