Dreadnought Design Releases Ivor The Engine For iPad

May 4, 2011
Ivor The Engine is coming to the iPad. If you grew up in Great Britain during 1970s you may remember the beloved BBC TV series Ivor the Engine. The series, produced by Smallfilms, included memorable characters and great artwork with a British feel thrown in for good measure. The iPad title that was recently released is Ivor and the Dragon, though the App Store title is Ivor the Engine. When you look closer at the the app description you'll see the actual iPad game is indeed Ivor and the Dragon. This is an adventure game that is based on the previously mentioned TV show, Ivor the Engine. The game features artwork from the show with newly restored and rendered high-definition graphics. This is the very first time the show and the artwork have been restored and rendered in HD. In this adventure you will be controlling Ivor the Engine, and his driver Jones the Steam, guiding them: "through a series of puzzles along the Merioneth and Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited railway in the top left-hand corner of Wales." The British BBC Wales Arts website describes some of the lore of the series for those who were born after the 1970s or aren't British:
"Not very long ago, in the top left-hand corner of Wales, there was a railway. It wasn't a very long railway or a very important railway, but it was called The Merioneth and Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited, and it was all there was. "And in a shed, in a siding at the end of the railway, lives the Locomotive of the Merioneth and Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited, which was a long name for a little engine so his friends just called him Ivor."
The iPad game is narrated by Oliver Postgate, who was a big part of the original show, and it promises to be fun for all ages. Here are some of the game features from the app description:
  • HD rendering of Peter Firmin’s original Ivor the Engine artwork
  • Original story narration by the voice of the late Oliver Postgate
  • Original music and recordings by the late Vernon Elliott
  • A gameplay experience that immerses you in the world of Ivor the Engine
  • In-game puzzles and tasks suitable for children and adults
  • Easy point and tap screen controls
  • Clear in-game instructions
  • Reach different locations by setting control room levers
  • Unlock hidden locations
  • A heart-warming rendition of ‘Land of my Fathers’!
You can purchase Ivor the Engine on the App Store for $4.99.
