The iPad 3: Brighter Screens, Reduced Power Consumption

May 26, 2011
The iPad 3 may adopt Samsung’s AMOLED display technology, according to a report in The Korean Herald. This assessment came following a recent visit by Apple COO Tim Cook to South Korea. According to a source speaking on condition of anonymity:
“Apple wants to tap into Samsung’s AMOLED technology for an upgraded version of the iPad 2, considered as many by the iPad 3 that is likely to be launched toward the end of this year.”
Super AMOLED displays tout brighter screens, less sunlight reflection, and reduced power consumption. By moving to Samsung’s AMOLED technology, Apple would likely end its association with LG, which supplies the liquid crystal display for the iPad 2. Assuming Apple does move to AMOLED, this is interesting on two points. First, the two companies are embroiled in a legal disagreement over patent infringements. Second, Samsung does not currently use AMOLED with its own tablet, the first-generation Galaxy Tab. However, the technology is used with its Galaxy S 2 smartphones. This isn’t the first time a rumor surfaced that Apple was thinking of utilizing AMOLED technology. According to Macstories, Apple had considered AMOLED screens for the iPhone 3GS. However, at the time it was cost prohibitive. We’ll keep you updated on this and other iPad 3 rumors. The third generation iDevice should arrive sometime in 2012. What do you think?
