Super 8™ (Free) by Paramount Digital Entertainment is the official app of the movie of the same name from acclaimed writer and director J.J. Abrams. This video app, heavy with creative features, is free for a limited time and great for anyone that loves vintage photography, old-timey film and iPhotography in general. Any fan of J.J. Abrams will be smart to snatch this app up since it unlocks secret clips from the movie.
Upon opening the app, a reminder of the movie’s release date pops up before bringing you to the camera options and features. You have the option to add scratch and dirt overlays, change filters and add shake to frames. You can also change effects, including: sepia, chromatic, black-and-white and many more.
Once you have recorded your scene, you can view it in the “editing room,” where you can add an authentic looking film leader, name your film and include credits. You can then view your clip in the “projector room” where you must pull down a projector screen in order to watch your movie.
In true J.J. Abrams fashion, while viewing your new super 8 movie, you may find hidden frames from the Super 8 editing room. Once you have collected all of the missing frames, you can unlock a full clip at the movie’s website for full immersion into the Super 8 experience. You can share your clips by emailing them, or you can save them to your photo library and upload them anywhere you’d like, including YouTube.
It can be slow at times, almost to the point that you think the app has frozen up. Be sure you have Super 8 set up and ready to go so you don’t miss something incredible while waiting for it to load.
While this is a promotional app for a movie, it is by far the best one I have ever downloaded. Most of the time, movie related apps lack features and end up being deleted after a few days. This camera app has longevity, and if the developers continue to add features and options, it is likely to become the best special effects video app on the App Store.
