Supposed iPhone 5 Online Casting Call A Front For Some Unknown Scam

May 26, 2011
File this one under "LOL," folks, because it seems some swindler is making waves with the online posting of a supposed "official" iPhone 5 casting call. Through Craigslist. While the ad is almost certainly a fake (and has since been pulled), it was a curious little thing. Seeking a handful of actors of varying age, sex, and ethnicity, the Los Angeles, CA, listing is said to have been quite similar to an earlier H. Golan-submitted New York advertisement that MacRumors quotes as having run thus:
Commercial Casting Notice for Apple iPhone: Location: NY Employer: TIGER PRODUCTIONS Duration: 1 DAY, starts MAY 4TH. (Non-Union artist contracts) Director: H. GOLAN ROLE: family oriented happy, male and female AGE: 18-50 - huge range RATE: $3000 +10%
Naturally, no information about the director or his firm is available, and the validity of this older post has been neither confirmed nor denied. As for the current matter, the general consensus is, obviously, that no contracted advertisement outfit would post ads so blatantly and publicly online; and casting for this sort of high-profile production is never an open call. Talent and booking agencies -- particularly those in Hollywood -- just don't use Craigslist. Furthermore, professional communiques aren't usually littered with all-caps and multiple successive exclamation points. Oh, and American jobs don't usually pay in British pounds. Whatever the scam, let's just hope nobody was duped in any dangerous or significant way.
