The Acoustic Guitar Tuner HD (Free) by Amy Faulkner does exactly what its title claims. It is an HD quality guitar tuner that looks and sounds like an acoustic guitar. Its function is to help you tune your own acoustic guitar and it does so with efficiency. There are a lot of guitar tuner apps out there. Not many of them are free, and even fewer are iPad specific. Acoustic Guitar Tuner HD fits into that narrow category without leaving you frustrated with too many bells and whistles.

The features are simple. There's an image of the sound hole of a generic acoustic guitar with the six strings labeled for identification. When you touch a string, a tiny glow appears on that string and its pitch is audible. The best part about this app is how much it sounds like a real acoustic guitar. There is almost no digital characteristic to the audio.

You are given the option of tuning your guitar with the standard tuning (EADGBe), a drop D tuning for metal heads, and a half step tuning for serious rockers. The acoustic heavy metal genre might be on track to becoming the next big thing. Having this app at your side could help skyrocket your success.

I decided to try this app because I am always looking for a good, cheap (or free) guitar tuner that works well without all the unnecessary extras. I wasn’t expecting much from a free app, but I was pleasantly surprised by the warm and lifelike acoustic guitar sound. The option to drop tune was a clever addition as well. After tuning my acoustic guitar to the app, I checked it against my $80 Fender guitar tuner and the free app performed just as well as the actually tuner.

Overall, this free tuning app does an excellent job. It sounds just like a real acoustic guitar and offers a couple of extra tuning options. While it seems evident that this app is meant as a tool for generating ad revenue, it does a remarkably good job of helping you tune your guitar. While I’m not exactly sure why a person would need an HD quality image on a 10 inch screen to tune an instrument, I still say it is a great option.
