Geff the Giraffe ($2.99) by Appelsin is a book app featuring best friends Geff the giraffe and Humphrey the hummingbird in a children’s story. You read through each illustrated page to find out if they can help an injured bumblebee named Barney. There is even an option to have the words read to you. The story’s content would be best suited for children aged 7-9.

The app offers you the option to: listen to the book, read the book, or both. Once you start the story, you can hit the pause button to either turn the audio on or off. There are also controls for turning the text on or off as well as automatic page turning. Manually turning pages is performed by swiping across the screen. The pause menu also shows thumbnails of each page. The story itself would be better as an actual ebook (perhaps for the nook kids app) rather than a standalone app. There is no interactivity on the user’s part, aside from turning the pages.

However, this app’s main downfall is its lengthy story, which doesn’t even appear to have a solid plot. Each page is filled with a stymying amount of text for a children’s story that is trying much more than it needs to.

The illustrations are nicely done, but overall the story looks like it could use a bit more editing.
