Leaked Photograph Might Be First Peek Of iOS 5

June 6, 2011
TechCrunch has received a leaked image of what is perhaps an official -- albeit European -- build of Apple's forthcoming iOS 5. While it's just a (curiously glamorous) spy shot, it shows a few changes from the norm. Right off, you can see that the Camera icon is different, ditching its familiar grey gradient for a substantially darker backdrop. That's not unprecedented, nor is it of much concern.  Looking more closely, though, you can see a subtle addition to the status bar up top. And it seems to feature native Twitter integrationMG Siegler opines thus:
This concept isn’t quite as slick as some of the mock-ups we’ve seen over the past couple of years. Nor is it as slick as some of the jailbroken ones — which actually led to a new Apple hire. But again, it does fit in with the current iOS workflow. That may or may not matter at all. Regardless, this way of doing things would be much better than the current pop-up method for Push Notifications.
However, any assessment of a new notification system's merits based on a single still photograph is premature. After all, the banner shown doesn't necessarily reflect the mechanism by which live notifications are delivered (as the status add-on may simply serve as a note reminder after the push is first received), nor does it account for in-app notification behaviors. For all that and everything else, we're going to have to wait 10 or 11 more hours. Hang in there, folks!
