Updated App Now Tracks Blood Measure & Heart Rate Too

June 20, 2011
In between games of Angry Birds, movie watching, or web surfing, users can now check their vital signs using the free Withings WiScale app. It helps users measure and keep track of vital health information using additional hardware. First announced at CES earlier this year, the app works with two devices: the $159 Withings scale and the recently released $129 blood pressure monitor. The Withings WiScale app calculates a person’s weight, fat mass, lean mass, BMI, blood pressure and heart rate. It then uses this information to present easy-to-read graphs that help you track your overall health over time.

Results may then sent to others (like a doctor or loved one) or to other sites like Google Health and Microsoft HealthVault. New features, which were introduced for the blood pressure monitor, include:
  • Manual entry of blood pressure is available again
  • Such manual entries are tagged in the measure tables
  • Blood pressure export
  • Weight and Blood pressure graphs on the same screen (iPad and iPhone)
  • iPhone: unknown measures can be assigned to the correct user (was already possible on iPad)
Withings WiScale looks like a fantastic app that could be used at home or in a small office environment. Many will argue the scale and blood pressure monitor are each priced high and I would agree. However, when you recognize off-the-shelf devices do not interface with an iDevice or maintain a history of your vitals, the price doesn’t look so bad. Check out this video:
