Create Ink Blot Monsters With Daily Monster
Daily Monster ($0.99) by DailyMonster.com makes you a monster artist in moments.
The app replicates the artwork of Stefan G. Bucher’s “Daily Monster” website. Bucher’s monsters start with a blob of ink that then gets a burst of air.
The result is streaky ink with wispy tendrils that serves as the foundation for the monster’s creation. Bucher then uses pens to complete the rest of the monster. The finished product is one odd looking monster (generally clad in pinstripes and spats).
This app follows the same process, except you have the ability to digitally manipulate your monster. When starting, you are presented with a blank piece of paper and your ink blob.
Tap the blob to blow the ink and then see what demented monster is waiting to be made. Add parts, such as eyes, mouth, appendages, and accessories.
Manipulating the parts isn’t hard, especially if you have a grasp of layering objects. Select the part you’d like and use gestures to rotate and size it. You can also move parts up or down a layer, or flip it horizontally.
Those who may feel intimidated by the process or aren’t inspired can always select the “Insta-Monster” option. Hit the red panic button and an outlandish monster is ready for your personal touch. You can even add a picture from your photo albums or take a picture to invite the monster into your world.
It seems the current version of the app is a little unpolished. Several complaints in the App Store address the app crashing. I was able to work just fine using my iPad, though the app would consistently crash whenever I tried to select a photo from my library.
For some reason though, pictures in my saved photos album worked fine.
However, the developer promises an update that will address the crashing issue, as well as adding some improvements in user-friendliness.
This is a really fun app. I loved seeing the ink blob blown into some abstract shape that I then crafted into a monster.
