Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO Of Apple - Replaced By Tim Cook
August 24, 2011
In what is without a doubt one of the saddest news of the history of tech, Apple's founder Steven P. Jobs resigned from his position as Apple's CEO in a letter this Wednesday.
Thankfully, the world as we know it might not collapse quite yet as Steve Jobs will be remaining at Apple for now, Apple already decided, as its new Chairman of the Board. The CEO position will be taken over by former COO Tim Cook effective immediately.
This is, of course, dramatic news. Steve Jobs has played an incredible role through his life at Apple, from introducing the first personal computer to the iPhone and iPad. As chairman of the board, he will no longer play an active role in Apple's daily operations, but only participate in major strategic decisions during a few meetings a year. This will without a doubt have a major, possibly negative, impact on this company we've all grown to love so much.
Not to mention, the fact that Steve feels no longer able to be the head of Apple might suggest his health has deteriorated. Yet, we're all hoping he's doing just fine, and will make sure the company he founded and changed the world with continues to strive without him. Of course, we might just be in the denial.
Either way, thank you for making the world a better place Steve, we wish you the best!
Below you'll find Steve Jobs' letter of resignation followed by Apple's official statement on the matter.
Letter from Steve Jobs CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
