The New York Times: iPhone 5 Case Images Are “Potentially” Authentic

September 15, 2011
Hours after Case-Mate posted images apparently showing the company’s line of iPhone 5 cases (and then pulled them), The New York Times are calling the photos “potentially authentic.” They state:
From descriptions I’ve heard of the new iPhone from Apple employees, the images seemed potentially authentic. But it seems that Case-Mate might be sneakily trying to take advantage of the excitement over the phone by posting and then unposting the images. These things rarely happen accidentally, especially when it comes to new Apple products.
Assuming the leaked images (which were quickly removed by Case-Mate) are authentic, the iPhone 5 will be much different than its predecessor, the iPhone 4. BGR, who originally posted the photos from Case-Mate, suggests the iPhone 5 will come with a “radical new body,” and “have tapered edges and a slim profile as well.” Also, you'll notice that the back of the device in the picture seems to be metallic, which confirms previous rumors. Then, The New York Times claims that their sources also told them that the new iPhone will feature an 8MP back camera and maybe a NFC reader. The device, they say, will be launched "in the coming weeks." We’ve heard what seems like hundreds of iPhone 5 rumors in recent months. However, the pace of these rumors has accelerated since U.S. Labor Day. Most likely, the iPhone 5 will arrive later this month or in October. However, according to this evening's Times report, the new handset is coming sooner, rather than later. They state:
We’re just weeks away from the announcement of the new Apple iPhone 5, according to an Apple employee who asked not to be named because he was not allowed to speak publicly for the company.
As per usual, we’ll keep you updated.
