The first thing to do is add a list. If you have several trips coming up, make multiples and name each one to help keep things separate. This is good if you are packing for very different trips, like camping and going on a cruise. Set a date for each list to remind you of when you need to get packing. The app has a detailed list of items that one usually packs when going on a trip. When you are ready to start, you can either add items by searching for things alphabetically or browsing categories. For example, you can select shirts, pants, socks and shoes from the category, clothes. If you don’t see what you are looking for on the included list, you can add your own item from the “Custom” menu. As you build your list, items that you have added will be categorized for you. All paperwork items, like credit cards and passports, will be in one section, toiletries will be in another, etc.

There is a helpful section on tips for packing in the app as well. If you have trouble fitting everything into one small suitcase, read about the rolling method. The guide will explain how to roll your clothing and the best placement for items in your bag. There is also a packing aid that will help you organize your belongings for the best access, and information on ways to make sure your valuables travel safely. You can also import and export lists using iTunes file sharing or email them directly.

Packing Pal is great for people who like to be well organized and prepared for trips. However, using the app is a bit cumbersome. Every time you select an item it brings up a window for you to add additional information, like the quantity, or to change the category. Once the information is added, the item is saved and you are taken back to your main list again. This adds a few seconds to each item you add and starts to get tedious after a while. It would be better if you could select items without having to save each individual one.

Overall, this is a helpful app for those in need of packing organization. It is comprehensive with lots of features. If you are in a hurry, this app may not be for you, but if you don’t mind taking a few extra minutes to build the ultimate list, then Packing Pal would be a good choice. Pick it up in the App Store for $2.99.
