Vintage Radio™ ($3.99) by Orion Internet Services, LLC takes you back to the days before television (and especially before iDevices).
Whether you want to relive the childhood experience of sitting around a radio in your family room, or are just curious about vintage shows, this app certainly has a lot of broadcasts to offer.
Abbott and Costello, Sam Spade, Flash Gordon, and (my favorite) The Shadow are just some of the offerings available. With over 30,000 shows (more on that below), chances are you will find something to like.
Even the advertisements within the shows are amusing.
There is a wide span of genres available, including: adventure, mystery, and science fiction. If you’re not sure where to start, the “popular” section lists the shows with the most downloads.
Each of the shows has an inspector icon, which gives background information, such as when it aired and who acted in it. A timeline at the bottom has a triangle for a playhead. You can easily move it to jump ahead to any part of the show.
While playing the show, a steady rotation of vintage radios will give you something to look at. You can also just run it in the background as you look at other apps. However, in my opinion the best option is using AirPlay to your Apple TV, especially when showing your Photo Stream.
There are a couple of different ways to access the content offered through this app. For those looking to test it, a lite version is available, which offers 1,800 shows through a limited genre selection. The paid app offers 2,500 shows through all of the genres. Finally, a subscription plan can be established as an in-app purchase. This will allow access to the 30,000 plus shows.
Or finally, perhaps the best way is to win a copy!
