Quirky App Of The Day: Burp Contest

January 3, 2012
I can't burp. There. I said it. I have an esophageal flap that makes it almost impossible for me to burp. While all my bothers and sisters can sound like rough and tumble bikers after a dozen beers with just a few sips of anything carbonated, I just feel sick to my stomach after too much soda. Since I can't do it, I'm fascinated by it. When someone lets out a good one, I wonder, "Doesn't that hurt? Aren't you afraid of throwing up? Does it really taste like anything you just ate?" I'm definitely someone on the outside looking in. An app for a Burp Contest seemed like a good place to start my research into the mystical world of belching. Then, I got sick from listening to it.

The entire app is a compilation of people who burped into their phone's microphone. Yes. It's user participation-based. Belching is one of those things where if you can't do it, the whole thing seems almost painful. I listened to some of them and wondered if part of their stomach didn't come up with it. Truly, I don't understand it. I'll be honest, I couldn't listen to all of them without my gag reflex kicking in. I don't know if it's the pregnancy morning sickness thing, or if it's because I can't do it, so, I imagine the worst. Either way, the sounds of forced greetings from someone's interior make me a little nauseated. For those who don't have such a weak stomach, you can rate your favorites. I hear other people marveling at the digestive magnificence that bellows from other people's mouths. I don't know if it's something that people would actively want to rate. Is it? Are people proud enough to want to record for others their handy work with inner gastrointestinal sound effects? Feel free to enlighten in the comments, because I am sincerely lost in this strange world. Burp Contest is an iPhone app available for download in the App Store for the awesome price of FREE!
