Acolyte: Channel Mythic Gods And Fight In Their Honor With Your iPhone

March 8, 2012
If funded, a new Kickstarter project by developer Crooked Smiles will turn your iPhone into a divine artifact to channel the power of the gods. This new game, titled Acolyte, lets you choose a mythical god to follow such as Zeus or Athena. Each god has specific physical domains they rule over, such as earth or fire. If you prove to be faithful, your god will give you special powers from their domain to use in battle.

To use the powers, you trace the desired glyphs in the air with your phone which will, according to the developers, "channel divine forces to battle your foe in a toe-to-toe duel." For each duel won you will gather the blessings of your god, who will then bestow new invocations and powers upon you.

Choosing your powers.Gameplay begins with meditation, a time when both players beseech their gods for powers. Once powers have been gained the players will go face-to-face, carefully choosing invocations to be used against their rival via phone gestures. Once the current powers are exhausted a session of meditation will allow both players to recharge again for the final battle, which will determine the winner.

You will need to plan carefully so that you do not run out of vitality. Of course, since your opponent is human and not a computer, if you are running low you could always just try to bluff them into using all their power.  This game offers many possible ways to outthink your fellow player.

Invocations

There are other games that involve making motions with your iPhone in gameplay, but Acolyte is no "slash and hack" thriller. It requires real thought and concentration much like chess or an RPG battle. Developer Dug Steen told AppAdvice via email that Acolyte will be completely VoiceOver accessible and has been designed to be played by everyone, even people with vision impairment.

If you want to help make Acolyte a reality just visit the Kickstarter page and pledge.

One dollar is all it takes to support the game and pre-order a copy, or you can get other great items by pledging more. Even if you are not interested in pledging you owe it to yourself to look at their very entertaining Kickstarter page or their Crooked Smiles website.

We think this game is a great idea and will be a lot of fun to play. Would you enjoy this type of face-to-face gameplay?
