The Classic Weather HD Gets A Huge Facelift

The Classic Weather HD Gets A Huge Facelift

July 31, 2012

While there have been a crop of weather apps lately, there are still the classics. And of course, one of our old staff favorites at AppAdvice is Weather HD.

Weather HD remains a classic and a favorite because of the gorgeous animations that take up the screen, displaying the relevant weather information on top. I’m serious — you can literally just stare at Weather HD for a good while because it’s just so relaxing.

In addition to these beautiful high-definition animated videos and weather information, Weather HD provides users with global 7-day and hourly forecasts. Unlike some recent weather apps, Weather HD has been reliable and accurate as well, since it uses data from more than 14,000 Personal Weather Stations around the world. It even provides comprehensive data, such as humidity and precipitation levels, heat index, pressure, dew point, wind chill, visibility, sunrise, and sunset times. Since the app is universal, there is iCloud sync (iOS 5 only) to keep all of your cities and locations in tact.

With all of these features, it’s no surprise that Weather HD has continued to stand the test of time, since there are currently over five million users of the app. And now, it has gotten even better with version 2.0.

So what’s new? The biggest addition are the 3D weather maps, which have high definition visuals for temperature, animated radar and even cloud coverage. A new Quickview option allows users to see the weather for multiple cities at once, on a single screen. While the swiping gesture to switch locales isn’t too bad, this is a great way to get a quick overview of your favorite spots.

If you live in an area where the weather can get pretty harsh, then you may have dealt with warnings from time to time. With Weather HD 2.0, you can now get push notifications for any severe weather alerts in the area — this way, you’ll always be prepared.

There’s even a dash of social in the update, because you can now view live weather tweets from all over the U.S., if you’re into that kind of thing. Or better yet, you can see your friends’ weather and even share your own. Pretty nifty, though I’m not sure I’ll be using it personally.

Multiforecast is also available, where you can add content from services like Accuweather and MeteoGroup and compare forecasts. This is a feature that will require a yearly in-app purchase: AccuWeather will be $0.99 per year, and MeteoGroup will be $1.99 a year.

And the best part of this update? It includes some fantastic new cutting-edge weather animations. Hey, it’s more pretty stuff to stare at! The graphics look as sharp as ever, and are definitely ahead of competitors.

Here’s the full 2.0 change log:
