Watch Out Vine, Vimeo Buys Echograph To Get Into GIF-Making Business

February 14, 2013
Vimeo, the popular video sharing service, is getting into the GIF-making business. The company has acquired Echograph from Clear-Media. First released in May, Echograph combines video and photos to create what is called animated photography. These videos can then be posted to the Internet, and used in Final Cut, Keynote, or iBooks Author via HTML5. Clear-Media CEO Nick Alt will become Vimeo’s Vice President of Mobile, leading development across multiple platforms. Says Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor:
We chose Echograph because it helps people easily create beautiful high quality video content. That, with Nick's proven track record of building innovative video apps made it a perfect fit for Vimeo.
For those who have never seen Echograph in use, take a look at this video:

Vimeo is expected to keep Echograph as a separate product, and perhaps use the acquisition to take on Twitter’s new service, Vine. As part of the deal, Echograph is no longer priced at $1.99 in the App Store. Instead it is now free. Echograph and Vimeo are available now for download. Both apps are universal.
