Coachella To Feature Apple's iBeacon Micro-Location Technology
April 9, 2014
Apple’s iBeacon technology will be used at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which kicks off on April 11. The micro-location technology is likely to deliver proximity-aware notifications, navigation, and other information to attendees.
The news that Apple’s new technology would be provided at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif. was posted on an update for the official Coachella app. Under What’s New is the message, “Enable On-Site iBeacon notifications by enabling Location and Bluetooth!” The Coachella website is less specific, stating “Use Bluetooth to interact with beacons placed around the grounds.”
First held in 1999, Coachella is an annual two-weekend, three-day music and arts festival. The 2014 event runs April 11 through April 13, and April 18 through April 20. Performers this year include Beck, Lana Del Ray, and Outkast.
First introduced by Apple at last year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), iBeacon is an indoor positioning system that features low-powered, low-cost transmitters. It allows iOS devices and other hardware to send push notifications to iPhones and iPads in close proximity. The technology is already being used at Apple retail stores, Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums, and other locations.
