Roll to recover Captain Quill's hat in Tilt: Quill's Quandary
Tilt: Quill's Quandary ($1.99) by Noah Rosenfield is a cute puzzle game with an adorable hedgehog that the entire family will enjoy. If you’re a fan of other titles like Manowar and Domino Drop, then you will like what Tilt: Quill’s Quandary brings.
Everyone loves hedgehogs, right? That’s why one of the most iconic video game characters is a blue hedgehog, but that doesn’t mean that there is no room for other cute prickly friends! If you’ve been following my work here at AppAdvice, then you should know by now that I’m a big fan of puzzle games, and when you add in charming little critters to the mix? Well, I’m all over those! So naturally, when I heard of Tilt: Quill’s Quandary coming to the App Store, I knew that this was a game I had to check out. Needless to say, I’m not disappointed.
Tilt: Quill’s Quandary has a beautiful art style that I fell in love with on first sight. While the game falls in line with the flat and minimalistic visuals that are so popular nowadays, it’s still done in a way that is delightful, pleasing, and oozing with personality. The colors are bright and vibrant, and there is a nice mix of color gradients when needed. Animations in the game are smooth and fluid, which is nice since it is reliant on tilting (as you can tell by the name of the game). The ambient soundtrack is whimsical and soothing, adding to the adorable factor of the overall game.
Like many other puzzle games, Tilt: Quill’s Quandary is based on levels that are split up across 10 different chapters, which are ships in this case. There are about 10 levels for each ship, so there is plenty of puzzle solving for your money here. The goal of each stage is to help Captain Quill recover his lost hat, and this can only be accomplished by rolling him to the next floor through intricate puzzles that just become more complex as you go. While things start out fairly easy and straightforward, things get complicated the further you roll along, and new game mechanics will be introduced along the way.
Controls in the game are intuitive and fun, though it will take some practice to fully master. As you can guess by the game’s name, everything in Tilt: Quill’s Quandary is done by tilting your device. As you tilt, Captain Quill will roll, and the cargo boxes on the ship will also slide around. You have to figure out a way to grant Captain Quill safe passage to the ladder that leads deeper into the ship, though sometimes keys are needed. It is best to tinker around with the tilt sensitivity in this game, though, as sometimes you are able to move just Captain Quill around without disturbing the cargo boxes — this is key, and practice is necessary.
While there are no stars to earn or points to rack up in Tilt: Quill’s Quandary, it’s still a fun and enjoyable game. While there may not be a lot of replay value once you get through all of the stages, I think the gameplay itself is rather challenging, and will take a bit of time before you can beat it fully. Plus, the graphics are insanely adorable and the music is fun. How can anyone resist a cute pirate hedgehog, anyway?
I recommend giving Tilt: Quill’s Quandary a try if you love physics-based puzzle games and don’t mind tilting your device around like crazy to play. Tilt: Quill’s Quandary is available on the App Store as a universal download for your iPhone and iPad for just $1.99 with no in-app purchases.
