Review: Spawn Illuminati

December 27, 2008
Overview Hmm... How to explain just what Spawn Illuminati is… Umm… It's neato? Totally far out and groovy? Basically, it’s a way to create artistic images from a mesmerizing pattern of colors that swosh around and respawn and change colors and- well… it’s neat. Just look at the pictures. The purpose of this app is to create stunning images that you can use as wallpaper or something to impress your friends.

Features

  • Touch Response
The particles dance around on the screen and respond to your touches. They’ll follow and circle your finger wherever it is on the screen. If you double tap the particles will respawn, like fireworks or a flower. Horizontal pinches speed them up, spreading will slow them down. Vertical pinch on the left side of the screen will give the particles a longer tail, spreading will give them a shorter tail. Vertical pinch on the middle of the screen will make the particles bigger and more out of focus, spreading will make them smaller. And finally, a vertical pinch or spread on the right side will change their colors.

  • Future Update
According to their website, an update is due to come shortly. Judging from the screenshots they’ve released, it looks to add another feature, the swirly swirl! Here’s an image I stole from their website to give you an idea of what the hell I'm talking about.

Breakdown

The Good: You can get some really cool looking images from this app. Like, really complex, colorful stuff that takes very little effort to create. But I’m not going to set them as my wallpaper because I like what I currently have. I don’t know, maybe I’ll open an art gallery in LA or something. Charge people thousands of dollars for my iPhone art.

If you feel like tripping out and listening to some Pink Floyd, you can run this app and watch the pretty colors swirl around for hours on end. Far out, man. Swirling colors following your fingers in tune to a rockin' soundtrack... Wow... But, you know, that’s if you're into that sort of thing. The Bad: Since the particles basically have a mind of their own, it’s kind of difficult to create an image with any real control. (Though, that’s sort of the point- the beauty in randomness). You’re at the mercy of random. If you’re a control freak, and I’m not saying I am, but if you are, it might bother you that you just have to be patient and wait for the exact color pattern you’re hoping for. The biggest problem is trying to take a screenshot when the image is exactly how you want it. I felt most of the photos I got ended up being a half second late, so the image wasn’t as perfect as it could have been. I wish there was some way to pause the screen, because when you take your fingers off the screen to grab the screenshot, the particles will change what they're doing. It's a bummer, man.

Verdict

If you’re looking to create some colorful, nifty images, you should check this app out. Right now, it’s on sale for 99 cents. The images you’ll be able to make will look similar to the ones I posted. If that sort of thing floats your boat, then you’ll want to buy it. If those images weren’t doing it for you, then I wouldn’t recommend it. It just depends on your personal preference.
