Apple Design Awards 2010: Winners Announced

June 9, 2010

Apple has announced this year's winners of their coveted Apple Design Awards, which this year have been restricted to the iOS platform.
The Apple Design Awards 2010 recognize iPhone OS applications that demonstrate technical excellence, innovation, technology adoption, and quality.
The winners were announced during a special ceremony at the WWDC today - and although Apple's webpage hasn't been updated yet, we've got the full list of winners! They are: Financial Times: a newsreader application that exists both in an iPhone and iPad edition, which allows the user to view content from the Financial Times newspaper. The application was developed by The Financial Times Ltd, and you can check out some more info on the app here. Doodle Jump, from Lima Sky: This application is probably the only game I've played continually throughout my entire two years as an iPhone owner - and even in reduced resolution on my iPad; it's that good. I personally think that this app is so deserving of an Apple Design Award. Check out some more info here. Brushes for iPhone, by Steve Sprang: Also available for iPad, Brushes for iPhone transforms your iDevice into a canvas, complete with every tool the artist could ever desire. Read more if you feel like unlocking the artist inside of you. TabToolKit, by Agile Partners: Another killer iPhone app that has also made the transition over to iPad, TabToolKit is an incredibly powerful music notation and guitar tab viewer that even includes multi-track playback. Read more about this rockin' app here.

Articles for iPhone, by Sophiestication: Articles lets you quickly and easily discover Wikipedia articles on your iPhone or iPod touch. Also existing in an iPad version, Articles is definitely worth a look. Flight Control HD, from Firemint: Most of you will already be aware of Flight Control HD - the iPad version of the supercool iPhone hit, Flight Control. Much like Doodle Jump, this game is simple yet innovative and is definitely worth a look - if you've got days to waste! Twenty Minute Meals, from Zolmo: This application brings British chef Jamie Oliver's recipes direct to your iPhone. It's elegantly designed and the meals are quick and delicious. Read more here. Star Walk for iPad, from Vito Technology: Star Walk is a feature rich astronomy app that exists both for iPhone and iPad. Both apps include a digital compass, which traces the sky as you move about, and pulls Wikipedia articles on the constellations you're seeing. The iPad version is obviously bigger and better - check it out here. Real Racing for iPhone, also from Firemint: Real Racing for iPhone is a brilliant iPhone racer. The graphics are crisp, and the gameplay is fun and addictive. Read our review on Real Racing, and if you haven't got the app, check it out in the App Store (below). Pinball HD, from Gameprom: Pinball HD is the best pinball experience on the iPad by far. It totally utilizes the iDevice's capabilities to produce something spectacular. Check out our review for Pinball HD here.

So there you have it: the winners of the Apple Design Awards 2010. But what do you think? Has anybody been left out of the winners' circle? Or are there any applications in there that have given you a bad iDevice experience? As always, let us know in the comments box below!
