Live Out The iPad + Velcro Dream, Velcro-Free

July 26, 2010

Remember the iPad + Velcro video we told you about not so long ago? The one that was so good, Apple dedicated a page to it on the iPad section of its site? Well, I loved that video. It was fantastic. It showed exactly how iPad owners could take their device to the next level, with the simple addition of a couple of strips of Velcro. And, what's more, the possibilities were endless: you Velcro'd an iPad to the wall, and it became a digital photo frame; above the stove, it became a cooking aid; against a window, it became a weather forecaster. On the surface, it was a match made in heaven. However, there was one pretty major aspect to the iPad + Velcro concept that many (including myself) found less-than-appealing. And, I'll give you a hint: it wasn't the iPad. Sticking a few strips of Velcro to the back of an iPad seems like an act of insanity to most fanboys, regardless of how cost-effective (and brilliant) the end result would be. It's not something I'd ever consider doing. Though, I'll freely admit, being able to Velcro my iPad to a wall to display a photo slideshow sounds so appealing I'm almost shaking as I type this out.

Now, there's a solution to this dilemma: a recently-released case, dubbed The Wallee, brings the ability to affix your iPad to a wall without the need to attach a couple of ghastly strips of Velcro to the device's sleek, smooth back. Designed by a "small group of fanatics" from Melbourne, Australia, The Wallee consists of two parts: a hard protective shell which holds the iPad - and a patented locking 'X' wall plate, which the aforementioned shell affixes to.

Users can choose whether they want to replace their current case with the shell, or just use the Wallee shell whenever they want to hang their iDevice. The shell itself protects your iPad to the max. If something terrible happened, and the iPad was to fall from the fixture, there's a good chance it would end up getting out of the mess scratch-free. And furthermore, the Wallee hard-shell case itself doesn't look half-bad:

The Wallee kit will sell for $49.95AU, which converts over to approximately $45, and £27. Shipping will be free worldwide. Users may purchase additional brackets (a good idea, if you want to mount your iPad in various places around the house) for $10 each. The case and brackets come in a variety of colors, including orange, black, clear, white, and blue. So what are you waiting for? The product is scheduled to start shipping in early August. If you want to go mount-mad, and show off your iPad in style, be sure to order your Wallee kit before the first batch sells out! And, in the meantime, prospective buyers can keep up to date with the latest Wallee info by visiting their blog, here.
