Facebook Enters The Location Game With Places & Check-Ins

August 19, 2010
Location-based social networks like Foursquare and Gowalla are without a doubt growing popular, especially thanks to the iPhone. Yet, for many of us, the central issue with these networks is that they haven't yet really reached critical mass. I mean, if you're the only one to use it in your area (my case), then it doesn't make much sense, does it? Well, this might be about to change as Facebook, 500 million users strong, just got a location-based feature of its own. Called "Places" the new feature allows you to "check-in" places based on your GPS position (but only in the US for now). This way, you can let all your friends know where you are, at any time.  You can also tag people that are with you, share you location on your feed, see who's where and so on. We'll let you discover it yourself. It's already available on the iPhone, via a new update to the Facebook app released last night. Which happens to bring background photo and video uploading on iOS4 as well. What do you think about it? [Thanks to Michael Allendorf for the heads up!]
