PlayOn Lets You Bypass Flash And The App Store

August 8, 2010

What do the masters of bypassing streaming video limitations do when they get hung up in the App Store? They bypass it too. As mentioned previously on AppAdvice.com, PlayOn is an application that lets you stream content from online video sites to unsupported devices. They currently do it for game consoles, and they even submitted an app to the App Store, but it was never approved. Rather than give up, they did exactly what Steve Jobs said they should do and made an HTML 5 webapp for it.

Just like the iPhone app they planned to release, cnet.com reports that the webapp lets you access all of the streaming video sites on your mobile device. It works by loading an app on your desktop or laptop which transcodes the video and streams it to your iPhone or other mobile device. While this is obviously not the simplest way to view online video, it does work as advertised and gives you access to multiple streaming video sites in one application. While Hulu+ wants to charge $10 per month just for their content, PlayOn gives you access to multiple content providers and multiple payment options, with the highest being $79.99 for lifetime service.
