Professional Artists (Not Me) Adopting The iPad

August 5, 2010

I'm no artist.

While making art on the iPhone and iPad is not news, some great examples of artists transitioning to the iPad are now coming out of the UK. The above image is not one of them, scroll down to see good examples. By far, the most famous app for creating art on an iDevice is Brushes, a result of the creation of a New Yorker cover with Brushes for the iPhone. A photo spread on Telegraph.co.uk shows several works using Brushes for iPad, ArtStudio and Sketchbook Pro.

Many established artists are seeing a real benefit to iPad art. The article reports that a 59-year-old artist from the UK, Corliss Blakely (whose work is seen above), has switched to the iPad after a lifetime of painting oil on canvas. She can now create on her iPad, and sell prints of her work online for about £220 (about $350), all without picking up a single brush. Creating digitally means no art supplies, no need to scan images for prints and no need to store and protect created works. For the professional artist this means they can get their works to market much faster and cheaper, while to amateur artists it means they can hone their craft with little expense. While buying an iPad may seem like a high cost just to practice art, it is a one-time purchase. Artists are constantly spending large amounts of money on consumables like paints and canvases, which are ongoing expenses.

Are the iPad and its descendants the painter's canvas of the future? Make sure to check out Brushes for iPad, ArtStudio and Sketchbook Pro in the App Store, and let us know what you think in the comments.
