QuickAdvice: Take Your Cloud With You On Cloud2go
Cloud2go ($1.99) by phapswebsolutions is an unofficial Cloud app that allows you to take your Cloud account with you.
If you remember back in March, Cloud App was getting a lot of hype. The developers claimed it as 'a Mac users' wet dream'. And how right they were. Cloud App is a very simple file sharing app that allows you to upload files and share them quickly with a http://cl.ly link.
The service has been out since April 1st, but there hasn't been a way to use the service on the go. No official iPhone version of Cloud App has been released from the developers, but now we have the next best thing: Cloud2go.
Open the app and log in with your Cloud App account credentials. If you don't have an account, you can get one for free at http://cl.ly The app will suit both portrait and landscape fans.
In the app, you can add text, photos, and videos into your account to share with others. When you add a file, it will be uploaded in the background so you can continue to do other things while you wait for a big video to upload. Once the download is finished, you'll be notified with a vibration or a sound (this can be turned off in the app settings). Yes, this sound or vibration will also happen if you aren't even in the app, which is great.
Text is simple, and is just plain text. You can import from the clipboard of your device. Photos and video resolution can be controlled in the app settings. As always, lower image and video quality will result in faster uploads, higher quality will be slower. Be aware that HD video can't be uploaded, since the videos go through compression.
There's also Bookmarks, which allow you to paste in any links from the clipboard. Selecting these will take you to an in-app browser, opening this link.
Once you get an upload done, the app will automatically copy the link into your iPhone or iPod Touch's clipboard so you can send that link to your friends and family immediately. If you rather not have this automatic link copying, toggle it on or off in the settings. Auto Sync can be set up too, and can occur from every 15, 30, or 60 minutes, or never occur.
Another great thing this app shows is how many times a file has been downloaded. On each beautiful icon associated with the file type, there's a little gray bar under that will show a number - this is the number of times that particular file has been downloaded. If you use Cloud App to do all your file sharing, this is a great way to keep track of your files, and see who actually downloads the things you send them!
Thanks to document interaction in iOS 4, you can add any type of file to Cloud2go. An example is if you have an .mp3 or .pdf file in an email, just tap and hold the attached file. A pop up menu should appear, with 'Open in Cloud2go' as one of the options. Opening it in the app will immediately upload it. All files are accessible from in the app, which is great if you use Cloud App as your primary service for files.
Files can be Trashed and end up in the Trash folder, but there isn't a way to empty the trash or restore a file. So they end up kind of stuck there, and are no longer accessible via the link they were assigned. I hope that the developer fixes this in a future update, because it can be a bit irritating to not be able to recover a file.
If you're a Cloud App user, then this is definitely a must-get. It's not only functional, but has a great interface. I've experienced no crashes or anything so far, so it's clear that the developers took great care to get this app shipped with quality, despite small issues (no HD video and the Trash issue).
Even for a 1.0 app, this is an awesome iPhone app for Cloud. Get it while it's on sale for $1.99!
