Apple To Strike Deal With T-Mobile, Says Wired Chief

September 9, 2010
Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired, yesterday started the circulation of a new wave of rumors regarding a T-Mobile iPhone when he posted on Twitter that such a deal had been struck. Here's what he said:
A T-Mobile manager casually mentioned to me that they're going to get the iPhone 3GS (but not 4, oddly) later this year. Common knowledge?
As far as I'm aware, it's not common knowledge, Mr Anderson. Though we have heard rumors regarding a T-Mobile (and Verizon) iPhone for some time now. It seems ridiculous that T-Mobile would settle for the iPhone 3GS "later this year," considering the world would only be half a year away from the upgraded iPhone 4 (iPhone 4G, or 4S, perhaps?). Personally, as a British iPhone owner, I'm surprised AT&T has managed to hold exclusivity for so long. Over here, the iPhone is floating around on quite a few different networks (O2, Vodafone, Orange...), though service plans generally don't radically differ. I'd be very surprised if AT&T doesn't lose exclusivity soon, though I said the same thing a few months ago, and they're still going (relatively) strong. And, while I suspect another network in the US will carry the iPhone soon, I think it'll be an iPhone 4 at least. What do you think? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments. And, thanks to modmyi for spotting this.
