Inconsistent Plex App Arrives For iPad

September 5, 2010
Plex has finally arrived for the iPad. Created by the company of the same name, the app allows you to stream multimedia to your iPad. To do so, you'll need to install the Plex media center application onto your Mac. While the desktop software is free, Plex for iPad is priced at $4.99. Since most of the work is done within the Mac application, the app's main function is to stream your content. It also works as a remote control for your Plex for Mac installation. Through multiple tests, I'm not sure if the price tag is right for this app, at least in its current form. I found the app sluggish at times and the media presented wasn't as clear as expected. Also, there were times when I got strange error messages that made no sense to me. When this happened, the app threw me back to my iPad's home screen.

Of course, streaming apps such as this rely heavily on your Wi-Fi connection, which I recognize. The problems I've had could have absolutely nothing to do with the app itself. On a positive note, the setup process is extremely easy. Once you have the application installed on your Mac, it is very easy to wirelessly connect it to your iPad. If you already use Plex on your Mac, purchasing Plex for iPad is probably a no-brainer. After all, it's nice to access your media files from anywhere in your house. However, for new Plex users, I suggest you try out the free version for the Mac first. If you find its capabilities worth it, then download the iPad app. You can download the Plex for iPad app for $4.99 from the App Store.
