Jailbreak Only: Enable HDR Photography On Your iPhone 3G Or 3GS

September 15, 2010
HDR photography is a great feature included in Apple's iOS 4.1 software update. By combining several photographs taken at multiple exposures, your HDR enabled Camera app can create beautifully exposed digital images in a matter of seconds. We've taken a close look at the power of HDR photography, and it's impossible to deny that it really does make a difference in the photos captured on your iPhone. However, unfortunately, Apple has only made this great feature available to iPhone 4 owners. iPhone 3G owners have been left in the shadows following iOS 4's release, a couple of months ago. They didn't get folders, multitasking, or custom backgrounds. However, owners of both 3G and 3GS handsets may rest assured that they haven't faded into the past just yet. Thanks to the jailbreaking community (and Redmond Pie!), a means of enabling HDR photography on iPhone 3G and 3GS handsets has been found. And, what's more, the process couldn't be simpler. All you need is a jailbroken handset, and the ability to follow a few basic instructions. If you haven't gotten around to jailbreaking your iPhone 3G or 3GS, information on how to do so may be found here (iPhone 3G) and here (iPhone 3GS). Once you've got a liberated device, hit Redmond Pie for a detailed list of instructions regarding the process of enabling HDR photography on your iPhone. Unfortunately, a one-click package is not yet available through Cydia. This means a series of instructions do need to be carefully followed in order for iPhone owners to gain an HDR enabled handset. If you're not feeling up for it, you could always wait a couple of weeks for such a package to be available on Cydia. But, for the impatient iPhone owners out there, Redmond Pie's article should do the trick. A gallery below should explain exactly why HDR photography rocks. If you decide to attempt this yourself, do so with caution. And, be sure to let us know how it works for you in the comments box below! [gallery]
