A Look At JumiMouse+, A Remote Desktop And Input Client - Plus A Chance To Win A Copy

October 5, 2010
JumiTech has a number of apps in the App Store, and JumiMouse+ has actually been around for over a year now, but I got a chance to finally try this app in its latest form and feel it's worth highlighting. JumiMouse+ is a remote access client to control your PC from your iPhone or iPod touch. Most of you may be wondering what the big deal is because there are apps like LogMeIn Ignition for that purpose. That is correct, but JumiMouse+ has some unique abilities and a very notable price difference. I'll start by mentioning the similarities of JumiMouse+ to most other remote desktop access clients. You can view your computer's display directly on your iDevice's screen using Wi-Fi or 3G, drag and drop objects, zoom in and out with pinch and un-pinch gestures, enter characters with the iOS keyboard, connect to any number of different PCs, and there is support for tap and double tap actions. Another similarity is that you do need to install controller software on your desktop or portable computer. Currently, the Jumi Controller app is only compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP -- both 64 and 32-bit flavors -- but a Mac OS X version is in the works. This app provides access to all of the server-side features for JumiTech's iOS apps. Unlike LogMeIn, you don't have a centralized account but rather just set your access password for each system using the controller software. One of the biggest differences of JumiMouse+ is the ability to turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a wireless keyboard and trackpad, complete with left and right buttons and a scroll bar. You can use the standard iOS keyboard or a full 101-key Windows compatible keyboard, which allows for combining multiple simultaneous button taps for keyboard shortcuts. This particular functionality is nearly perfect for those who want an extremely portable input method when using your computer from your couch or stretching your legs out on that super comfy chair you may have invested in. Amongst the standard input, you'll see five application feature access buttons. Running along the left hand side are buttons to view and hide the iOS keyboard, remote display, and mouse / scroll sensitivity options, the bottom-left houses the disconnect button, in the bottom-right is the full Windows keyboard view and hide, and between the left and right trackpad buttons is a TAP button. But what's this big TAP button? The TAP button allows access to simple remote control apps for specific applications. JumiTech includes their own for iTunes, Windows Media Player, WinAmp, and a number pad app. You can download, create, and modify your own TAP apps to be used within JumiMouse+. JumiMouse+ is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later. JumiMouse+ is available in the App Store for $3.99. For those looking to give the app a shot without breaking out the credit card, the free version of JumiMouse is available but lacks keyboard and TAP integration. I feel the $3.99 is a solid deal compared to something like LogMeIn Ignition's $29.99 price tag. It won't replace LogMeIn Ignition for me but is a definite companion. Testing JumiMouse+ with my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 system was an overall pleasure, especially when it came to using it as a wireless mouse and keyboard. That's not to say I didn't find my share of little quirks and hiccups but I'll be most certainly looking to try it with my MacBook when the Mac OS X controller software arrives. On a final note, JumiTech is also working on JumiOne, a package that will combine all of their products into one app and allow a user to pick and choose which advanced features they'd like to add via in-app purchase.
