Apple's iOS 4.2 software update "cripples" the iPad Camera Connection Kit, according to recent reports.
As 9to5Mac notes, a minor change in iOS 4.2 involved reducing the power from the iPad’s 30-pin connector from 100mA to 20mA. While this helps in conserving the iPad's battery life, many iPad accessories which require 20mA+ will no longer work with the touchscreen device.
Some iPad accessories are "self-powered," and these won't be affected by the change. However, Apple's Camera Connection Kit, many USB keyboards, and some microphones are reportedly no longer working with the iPad. When connected, the following message is displayed:
The connected USB device requires too much power.Obviously, many iPad owners are going to be pretty annoyed by this. As of this moment, we're not sure whether this has arisen from a simple bug in the iOS, or whether Apple intentionally made the change in an attempt to conserve iPad battery life. We'll let you know if more news becomes available. In the meantime, feel free to tell us if you've been affected by this problem in the comments below.
