A Chance To Win A PhotoToMac Promo Code With A Retweet Or Comment
January 25, 2011
AppAdvice has teamed up with Galarina in order to offer you a chance to win one of five (5) promo codes for PhotoToMac for iPhone and iPod touch ($1.99).
It's safe to say that technology is really making this a wireless world, We can display music, video, and photos stored on our phones and computers on our living room televisions, we can print documents and photos without ever transferring them from a mobile device to a computer, and we can now transfer photos and videos from our iDevice to our Mac without ever touching a cable.
PhotoToMac doesn't require any cables, any additional software, and not even a web browser. Unlike most other file sharing capable iOS software, PhotoToMac doesn't use iTunes File Sharing or a specific HTTP port with a web interface. Instead, Galarina has decided to harness the simplicity of Apple's File Sharing Protocol in Mac OS X. Because PhotoToMac uses AFP, you can transfer files to a Mac, a Time Capsule, or an external drive connected to an Airport Extreme.
Setting up Mac OS X File Sharing is typically quite painless. File Sharing configuration is performed within System Preferences, located under the Apple menu. Once there, navigate to the Internet & Network group, then click on Sharing. You enable the File Sharing service by clicking on the checkbox to the left. You can leave the default shared folder and volumes as is, or add one specifically for PhotoToMac by clicking on the "+" sign.
On first launch of PhotoToMac, you'll be prompted to allow the app access to your location. I'd just like to pass on that this prompt is a general iOS alert, and is only being displayed because PhotoToMac is going to access and retain the metadata for your photos and videos. That metadata contains possible geotags, and PhotoToMac does not actually access your current GPS location.
The process of transferring your content can be as quick as a few seconds. Launch PhotoToMac, choose the device you wish to transfer photos, login, select the destination folder, choose the photos and videos you'd like to transfer, and tap on the action button in the top-right. The "Custom Select" option offers the ability to transfer content created since a specific day and time or content created since the previous transfer.
PhotoToMac is designed for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.0 or later. All images and videos supported and available in Apple's built-in Photos app are able to be transferred. Content is transferred at the original quality and with the original metadata in tact.
