Jailbreak Only: Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 Untethered Solution Released - Fixes Bluetooth!

January 9, 2011
Great news, jailbreak fans: the iPhone Dev-Team has just released a new version of its untethered redsn0w jailbreak tool (0.9.7b5). The new version apparently fixes Bluetooth, "and any sandbox-related issues," too. Here's the update:
The fifth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). Bluetooth is now working (and any sandbox-related issues should be resolved too). Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using these links (http://pastie.org/1403214) (the links won’t work unless you’re a legit developer currently logged in). There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it’s excruciatingly slow compared to the Mac version because it’s forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it’s processing the very large IPSW images. It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won’t be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.
As you can see, the Dev-Team is still recommending that only "testers" use this solution. Currently, a more stable, albeit tethered jailbreak solution is available in the form of redsn0w 0.9.7RC8. However, as this is a "tethered" solution, jailbroken iDevice owners will have to boot their iPhone via redsn0w whenever it powers down, in order to maintain jailbreak app functionality. The great thing about the newer versions of redsn0w is that they support the iPhone 4 and iPad. Previously, an untethered solution was only available for "legacy" devices such as the iPhone 3G. Even though this most recent version of redsn0w (untethered) is recommended only for "testers," it does point toward an upcoming final version of the jailbreak tool. For now, I'm staying away from the untethered version of redsn0w. Instead, the tethered solution works very well - it only gets mildly annoying if your iPhone runs out of power. Let us know your thoughts on redsn0w in the comments below. For more information on the popular jailbreak tool, check out the appropriate section of the Dev-Team's blog.
