Such A Shame: Toshiba's Upcoming Tablet Takes A Swing At Apple's iPad

January 23, 2011
Toshiba's upcoming tablet, which is set to launch this spring, has already caused a bit of a stir. That's because the tablet's website (http://thetoshibatablet.com) is currently taking a swing at Apple's iPad, when users try to access the site from their mobile device. As you can see in the screenshot above (taken on my iPad), the entire message reads:
Such a Shame. Add this to the list of the interesting places on the internet you can't see on your device. Of course, if you had a Toshiba Tablet you would enjoy the entire internet. Yep, Flash sites too. [sic]
Honestly, I was ready to completely pan the Toshiba Tablet in this article, after reading the above message on my iPad a little while ago. Then, I actually visited Toshiba's website on my MacBook, and watched through the opening video. Surprisingly, I'm impressed. Don't get me wrong: I'm an Apple fan through and through, and I'll never, ever buy anything powered by Android OS again (I've tried it, and I don't like it). But, the Toshiba Tablet's tech specs are pretty darn good. If it was an iPad (the iPad 2, say), I would be very excited indeed. The Toshiba Tablet has a 10.1-inch display, and its screen resolution is 1280x800. It features two cameras; a rear facing five megapixel camera, and a front facing two megapixel camera. According to the latest SDK, the iPad 2 is only going to boast a one megapixel rear facing camera, and a VGA front facing camera. Furthermore, the Toshiba Tablet features a USB and mini-USB port, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a headphone jack. Its battery is replaceable, "by screwdriver-savvy people, like you." I'll be very interested to take a look at the Toshiba Tablet when it's released, because on paper, it looks to be a remarkable device. Check out the Toshiba Tablet's website (preferably not from an iOS powered device), and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
