The Swackett Weather Application Is A Great Addition To The Mac App Store

February 14, 2011
The Mac App Store, like the App Store before it, is filled with unique applications. One of them, swackett, provides weather on the desktop, but does so in a distinctive way. Calling itself “a different kind of weather app,” swackett provides the reader with a visual weather report using AccuWeather.com forecasts. It does this by using people symbols called “peeps,” which change with the weather. For example, on a cold winter day, the “peeps” wear hats, coats, and boots. On a warm summer day, they wear shorts and sunglasses. Each forecast includes actual temperatures, today’s high and tonight’s low. At the bottom, the application includes a 14 hour outlook, and radar images. Finally, "Watches and Warnings" alerts the user when there are national weather emergencies; they are thorough and timely.

The application, whose name comes from slang that combines, a Sweater, Jacket, or Coat, is free in the Mac App Store. However, different “shop editions” are also available, and can make the weather forecast even more unique. The $1.29 editions include: Modern, the 1950’s, Ale and Wench, British Invasion, Latin American, and Far East Editions.

Surprisingly, these add-ons are purchased directly from the swackett online store, and not using the Mac App Store. Does Apple know about this? This is a great application. I am looking forward to the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad editions, which will be released soon. Get the free swackett app today in the Mac App Store.
