Instagram's Days Could Be Numbered If Apple Has Anything To Say About It, And It Looks Like They Will
April 4, 2011
Apple could be getting ready to take on Facebook and Instagram with a new Photos app feature likely called “Photo Streams” for the iPhone/iPod touch. The feature, first uncovered by 9 To 5 Mac, is probably going to be announced as part of iOS 5 and let users to automatically share photos with others.
In January, we reported that iOS 4.3 beta 1 included some interesting hints at what might be coming in the future. The iOS included code marked “Media Stream” and “Photo Streams.” However, neither feature (whatever they actually are) was implemented in the final iOS 4.3 release, which came out in March. However, the code itself remained.
According to 9 To 5 Mac, Apple will probably announce these features at WWDC in June. They believe Photo Stream albums would work like creating playlists of songs using the iPod app. These stream albums could then be shared with a specified group of people.
No further information is available about “Media Stream.”
It will be interesting to see what these features actually are, and hopefully we’ll know in a few short weeks.
